REMEDIES BAR MOTOCROSS
ROUND 5
Back on Sunday April 19th the West of England Motor Club hosted round 5 of the Remedies Bar Motocross Championship at Whiteway Barton, Kingsteignton in front of an average crowd who had ventured out in a scorching heat, which was to mean that water had to be used to keep the dust down.
In the MX1 class there was some really close and exhilarating racing, especially between the leading two in the Championship, John May from Bristol and Andrew Gillett from Port Talbot in Wales. In the opening race it was May who led initially but he was to slow right up on lap 2 as he had picked up a front wheel puncture which was to let Gillett through who was to go on to take the win with just 7 laps completed when unfortunatley the race had to be stopped when Deryl Owen from Bridgend, who was up in to 2nd had taken a nasty tumble on one of the climbs and needed medical assistance and eventually had to be air lifted to Hospital. In race 2 it was South Molton rider Luke Hill who was to power away at the front and eased away from George Davis from Chippenham in Wiltshire and May with May moving up in to 2nd after 4 laps and it wasn’t long before Gillett was up in to 3rd and climbing all over May. Hill had a fair cushion at the front after 6 laps but all eyes were on the battle for 2nd which was to go on until 2 laps from the end when Gillett got the inside at a fast right hander and forced May wide, but May hadn’t finished as he was to close right up on the last lap and on the last corner he got the better drive out and snatched 2nd by literally .026 of a second to much applause. In the last race again it was Hill at the front being pursued by May, but May was to go down on lap 2 and through came Gillett who was to find himself at the front by the end of lap 3 as Hill had stalled his bike. Gillett was flying and managed to get away from Hill, but on lap 6 it was Gillett’s turn to suffer with a rear wheel puncture, much to his disgust and back came Hill to the front who went on to take the win.
In the MX2 class there was a hat trick of wins for defending Champion and current Championship leader Darren Shears from Plymouth who was to put up a fine display of riding. Wildcard Daniel Wyatt and Nick Wadge from Liskeard were to have a good tussle in two of the races with Darren Banwell from Shepton Mallett also getting in on the act, but a rear wheel puncture for Banwell in the last race when he was pushing Shears was to end his assault.
In the Over 35 class current Championship leader Jason Fraser from Truro was absent, so the door was open for a new leader which was to come in the shape of Richard Southcott from Gloucestershire who even though he didn’t win a race was to put together three consistant rides. Defending Champion Gary Down from Totnes was to take the honours in race 1 with Keith Hanson from Combe Martin winning the second race and making a return to motocross in the South West was Graham Beale from the Isle of Weight who had been out since the year 2000 who just managed to hold off Down in the last race to take the win.
The Junior Championship class was to see current Championship leader Brett Wheeler from Poole take the win in the first race, but only just from Luke Redstone from Bristol who was to put in a late surge on the last couple of laps to be within half a second on the line. Wheeler was to extend his tally in the Championship even more by winning race 2, but he was denied a hat trick of wins in the last race as it was Tristan Rowe from Newton Abbot who had led from the start who was to notch up his first win in the Championship this year to move him up in to 5th in the standings.
