Event Report

Gordon Brewer Trial
The Gordon Brewer Trial on the 8th August was held at Hound Tor, Dartmoor, in glorious weather with 70 solos and 5 Sidecars. The trial was conceived by Robert ‘Rabbit’ Wrayford and marked out with Roger Gittins and others and was intended primarily for Experts and Clubman to give them a ride as there is little amongst the plethora of easy trials that abound at this time of year. Three routes were marked which catered from C & D youths through to a couple of Pre-65’s and Twinshocks with Mono’s taking the bulk of the entry from Novice to Expert, and a brilliant trial it turned out to be. Another spot on event.
Heading up the experts Chris Curtis lost a measly one mark on section 5 which had a tricky hop onto a large boulder with a sharp drop off. Ross Hancock cleaned this section but had a 5 on section 9. Rob Rabbit Wrayford whose idea the trial was, finished 9th on 59 marks, which just goes to show what a fair trial they marked out. Best Clubman Expert with girlfriend watching was Thorne Pett who pulled out all the stops to impress loosing just 8 marks to runner up Rod Broom on 21. Best over 50 was George Atkins who came back to the start to change into the harder route white route from the yellow with Andy Wiltshire. In the Novice class riding the yellow route Tim Fey came out best but Spencer Chapple had a spot of bother and bent his rear sprocket. Never daunted out came the back wheel off came the sprocket and a large hammer appeared. A suitable large flat boulder came in useful for straightening the offending item. Spencer and his mate put it all back and finished the trial- all captured by the roving camera man- pictures on the web site. The question is-Who carries a large lump hammer with them in a trial and how do they carry it? Was it Tony Jones perhaps- stuffed into his waistband?
Best D was Billy Green on 28 beating some of his elders but with a lot of leg waving- yes I’ve got the photos to prove it Billy. The sidecars did a different route and almost inevitably Phil Sparks and Roger Tuck came out first on 11 marks to the 35 marks of Sam Rule with passenger Gareth Udy. Grateful thanks to all who helped- a good day out for all with the results all produced on Sunday night by 10.00pm
