Event Report

The Sunbeam Clubs ‘Southern Experts’ Trial on the 5th December was held at Hound Tor, Dartmoor, in glorious but icy weather with 16 Experts, 19 clubmen experts and 13 Sidecars making the start. There were 10 non starters unable to make it through the snow including our own Joe Baker snowed in on Exmoor. The trial was marked out and run by the West of England members and the course set by Robert ‘Rabbit’ Wrayford, Roger Gittins and Robin Hoare who was the Clerk of the Course, with Andy Cheeseman dealing with the sidecars with help from others. The Trial was for Experts and Clubman Experts only in both solo and sidecar classes. Two routes were marked for solos and two for sidecars and a brilliant trial it turned out to be. Another spot on event. Most of the sections followed the stream that flows down through the valley and using the banks and huge grippy Dartmoor boulders that are a feature of the terrain. With the frost was coming out of the ground on the first lap the experts found the second and third laps slightly easier as they warmed up. All the riders seemed to appreciate the natural terrain and sections that were laid out.

Heading up the experts Sam Haslam lost one mark on section 7 on the tree roots of the first lap which was only cleaned by Ricky Wiggins, runner up Ross Danby and almost local boy from Bodmin, Keelan Hancock. Sam followed this up with a three on the very next section to finish the first lap on 4 marks to Ross Danby’s 6, Ben Morphett’s 9 and Ricky Wiggins 11 marks. James Fry lost 5 on the first lap but could not improve in subsequent laps whereas Haslam lost just a single mark in the following lap and a clean last lap to Ross Danby’s 2 on the second lap with a clean last lap. The only lady to make the start- Becky Cook did not have a good day loosing 152 marks cleaning just 7 sections but then Craig Talbot also had an off day loosing 169 marks

In the clubman class Rob ‘Rabbit’ Wrayford finished 4th on 44 marks, just pipped by one mark by Chris Koch on 43, to winner Mark Nottingham’s 27 marks. Just goes to show what a fair trial they marked out.

Best sidecar experts on a different route were Cornishmen Tristan Jenkins/Carl Jenkins from Bodmin on 18 – six marks on each lap to Phil Sparkes/Roger Tuck on 27. In the clubman expert class Andy Scrivens/ Martin Lawford from Bristol were well ahead of the opposition on 46 marks to runners up Kevin Allaway/Aaron Green on 99 marks.

With a brilliant blue sky and bright sunshine it was very picturesque down in the valley although cold at zero degrees and with the frost just starting to come down again at 3.30 as riders were finishing there was time for the presentation. All riders I spoke to thought the trial was very fair and pitched about perfect for almost all the cream of the experts and clubman experts that reside in the southern half of England. If the word gets around I am sure there will be a lot more participating next year.

Grateful thanks to all who helped- a good day out for all with the results all produced by the Sunbeam club members by Monday afternoon.
