Event Report

Unseasonably warm weather welcomed the 32 C & D Class riders to the first round of the ACU British Youth Championship hosted for the first time by the West of England MC.
The dry weather over the previous 10 days made for very grippy conditions, with scores (at least for those select few) being low, so maximum concentration was the name of the game.
In the C Class it was Jack Price who came out the winner with a stunning score of just 1 mark lost on the 10 sub and long and twisting climb, up around and over a series of flat and pointed boulders, second place went to Dan Peace on 3 with single dabs on sections 9 on the first lap and 1 and 9 once again on the last lap, third place went to an unhappy Billy Bolt who finished on a score of 7, an uncharacteristic 3 on the double step on section 9 on his first lap left him hoping for a mistake from the 2 riders ahead of him, which just never happened.

In the small Medium Wheel D class it was a nail biting days riding for Eventual Winner, Toby Martyn finishing on 11 marks by the virtue of most cleans (31 to 30) from last years Medium Wheel Champion Jack Peace. On their first lap Martyn  Held  the advantage with a score of 4 marks Scored on the 9th and 10th sections from Peace on a score of 7 with a 2 on the first section and an uncharacteristic 5 on the 12th, on the second lap Peace made a strong fightback, with a score of just 2 marks with solitary dabs on the 1st sub and the 5th, with this time Martyn having a bad lap losing 6 marks a 5 on section 8 and a 1 on section 9, so with just a lap to go their was just 1 mark separating the 2 lads from opposite sides of the country and it was Peace’s bogy section number 1 that cost him the win with another solitary dab, Martyn was the last rider to finish the Trial and his score card showed, just a single mark loss on the 9th sub, giving the young Cornish rider the decision by the narrowest of margins.
In the Small wheel D class the 7 riders where also greeted by a gentle start to the season, with last years 3rd place championship rider Zac Collison winning the day on 5 marks lost 4 single dabs on the first lap, a solitary dab on the second and a clean last lap. In second place was Benjamin Teasdale, if it hadn’t been for section 9 he could well have walked away with the top spot on the day, but a 5 on the first and second lap saw him finish with twice Collisons score, though he will have been pleased to match the winner, with a clean last lap. In third place came Joe Faunthorpe on 12 marks, after leading the first lap on just 2 marks, he lost an unlucky 5 on section twisting climb of section 4 on the second lap. Still in contention for a win or second place a 3 on the 9th sub on the last lap killed his challenge for the day.

At the end of the day, it was noted by Clerk of the Course Phil Tupman, that the day had turned out to be a little easier than anticipated, but that it was good to see many of the lesser lights being able to clean some sections, with all the youth D small wheel riders finishing under 50 marks, hopefully all the lads will have their confidence boosted and with another 5 rounds to decide the 2009 Championship their will be plenty of time for points to be made up (and lost)
